Where the world opens up beneath you
To truly understand Capri, you have to see it from above. And to see it from above, you have to climb Mount Solaro.
At 589 meters above sea level - the highest point on the island - the view is limitless: below you, all of Capri, the Faraglioni, the coves, and the white cliffs; before you, Vesuvio, the Gulf of Napoli, the Sorrento Peninsula; on clear days, in the distance, the blue outline of Calabria and the Apennines. It's not a view, it's a privilege.
The route details
Starting point: Chairlift from Piazza Vittoria, Anacapri (reachable by bus from Capri town center)
Ascent time: 12 minutes (by chairlift)
Altitude: 589 meters above sea level
Chairlift prices: €14 return, €11 single ascent or descent. Children 0-8 years old: free.
Summer hours (June-September): 9:15-18:00
Spring/Autumn Hours (April-May, September-October): 9:30-17:00
Why climb it?
Because it’s the view that puts everything into perspective and brings a sense of peace. Monte Solaro is also known as ‘Acchiappanuvole’ (Cloud Catcher): at dawn, when the temperature difference between the sea and the rock creates a crown of mist, the island seems suspended outside of time. At the summit, you’ll find the bar and restaurant La Canzone del Cielo, with terraces and rocking chairs overlooking the sea – the perfect spot to pause and truly appreciate what it means to be in Capri.
The extra tip
Take the chairlift and walk back down, stopping at the hermitage of Santa Maria a Cetrella (476 meters), a place of unexpected, silent beauty. The walk down takes about 45 minutes - one of the most beautiful on the island.
